What is The Marking Criteria for The NAATI CCL Test?

Recently introduced system of testing a language in respect to English has become a very popular choice among immigrants to add on extra points for permanent residency. This test is based on use of English and your mother language one after the other. Talk about NAATI CCL test.

This test is divided into different sections known as ‘Dialogues’ which are marked out of 45 each. A student needs to clear the test by securing 63 marks overall whereas each dialogue needs to be passed individually as well with a minimum score of 29. However, 29 marks may not help passing the test, thus a minimum score of 32 should be targeted to pass the test securely.

Test is further broken down into twelve segments in each dialogue which is probably of maximum 35 words. Student will be given bands out of 3.75 approximately for each segment. It is important for student to understand all the aspects to clear the test. The first and the most important part is to convey the correct information. For example, if a GP prescribes two doses of medicine per day, your translation cannot say one dose. Also, be extra careful about dates, times, days, numbers or examples because they will be playing important role. If you miss any one of them, it is termed as major missing by the examiner which will greatly influence your scores.

In addition, the adjectives, names and time words can make a huge difference in your response which can affect negatively. One such example for this is “now”. If you do not say this word in your answer you are missing the urgency of the statement. If you put a wrong name, the whole conversation is happening with a different person. Therefore, extreme care should be placed while listening to names.

There is another important concept to consider while translating that is basic grammar. Which means if a person is a male, we should say he not she. This has been a common mistake done by some students having a bit of struggle with English. Similarly, tenses play an important role to get the accuracy of the information conveyed. One should make sure that if a sentence is dealing with past, the translation should be said in past as well.

As there are two different dialogues from different scenarios, they will be marked by separate examiners and is not aware the other dialogue’s score. Therefore, there is no chance of grace marking in NAATI-CCL. It is recommended to prepare and practice hard to ensure success in the test.
