Tips to Perform Better in PTE Written Discourse

The Pearson Test of English Academic is a test that is designed to assess speaking skills, reading skills, listening skills and writing skills of a non-native English speaker. In order to score high in the Writing section, written discourse skills play a major part in PTE.

Written Discourse: Written discourse means expressing your ideas in a logical flow and progression. In order to boost your written discourse scores, your content should be related to the topic. There should be a meaningful flow of text in your writing. There are a number of steps that you need to follow in order to increase your written discourse scores.

1. Understanding of topic: Before starting writing your essay, you have to carefully read the title of your essay and try to understand the meaning deeply. Spend 1 to 2 minutes to thoroughly comprehend the essay topic. For example, if you got an essay on air pollution and how it is affecting human health, then don’t explain about other types of pollution. If you are doing Summarise written text then you still have to spend time on thoroughly reading the text before writing your response.

2. Following a Structure: To achieve higher scores in writing, you must follow a structure. A good structure includes- an introduction, 2 to 3 body paragraphs and, a conclusion. Apart from that, always use academic vocabulary words and a formal tone in expressing your opinions. For example, use words like “myriad”, “asserts”, “salient” and “substantiate” etc.

3. By maintaining the word limit: To score high in summary and essay writing, always follow the word limit. If the word limit for summary writing is between 50 to 70 words, then don’t write less than 50 or more than 70. For instance, if you write 75 words for your summary, then it will extremely affect your written discourse scores. This same rule applies to essay writing as well.

4. By using correct sentence structure: It is important to include simple, complex and compound sentences in your essay writing for achieving good scores in written discourse. Try to write 6 to 7 simple sentences, 4 to 5 complex and compound sentences too.

• Simple Sentence: It has one independent clause.

• Complex Sentence: Complex sentences are a combination of two or more independent clauses which are joined by a coordinator.

• Compound Sentence: Compound sentences are a combination of an independent clause and a dependent clause.

5. Proofread for grammatical and punctuation mistakes: It is crucial to always proofread your work for grammar and punctuation mistakes. After finishing your summarise written text, proofread that there should be only one full stop at the end of your summary. Moreover, add commas, colons and semi-colons where they are necessary in summary and essay writing. Apart from that, always check for grammar mistakes in your essay and summary writing as well.

By following the above steps, you can easily avoid mistakes in your writing and can easily achieve 79+ in your writing section.
