How to Improve Your PTE Listening Score

Listening is the last section in PTE exam. In listening, you will be tested for ability to listen, comprehend and answer according to the task requirement. There are totally eight tasks in the listening score and designed to focus on testing different skills PTE.

Summarize spoken text

This task gives mark for both writing and listening. You will listen to the recording and write a brief passage about what you have heard from the lecture. To score better, one must improve their note taking skill as well as present the ideas in a structured way. Try to pick as many key words as possible, further, it is recommended to use template to present the notes you have taken in an effective way. The marks for this task will be based on content, grammar, vocabulary, spelling and form. once complete the tasks, you must proofread to minimize the errors.

Listening Multiple choice Multiple Answers/ Multiple Choice Single Answer

Both multiple choices (multiple and single answer) will test your comprehensive ability and how well you could connect the information with the recording to pick the right answer. To improve the chance of finding a correct answer, read the question prompt, then, skim the option and relate the option with the recording. With the simultaneous skimming and listening, you can eliminate the incorrect option or pick the correct answer.

Fill in the Blanks

As name suggest, you must type the missing words in a blank. To improve your scoring, read the transcription along with the pace of recording. Always keep an eye on a word before the blank as it helps you to pick the missing word. Also, practice plenty of vocabulary and its spelling.

Highlight Correct Summary

This task will test your ability to summarize the whole recording. You must select the option that best relates to the recording. Skim the option while listening. Also, take a note of key words and relate it to the option to choose the best one.

Select missing words

In this task, the last words or the phrase of the recording will be replaced by the beep sound. From the given options you must chose the best one to complete the whole context or sentence. Glance at the option before recording starts. Try to understand the whole context of the recording andΒ  pay close attention to the last phrase of the recording to choose the best option.

Highlight Incorrect word

Some of the words in the given transcription differs from what speaker says. You must click the different words in the transcript. Go with the phase of the recording and highlight quickly if you have heard the different word.

Write from dictation

The computer dictates the sentence and you must type exactly as you hear. Type as much of words as you can. Capitalize the first word and end with full stop. Proofread to minimize the spelling errors.

Scoring in listening

To score in this section, active listening is important, it can be improved only through the daily practice. Once you start to focus and understand more of what you heard, then, it would be easy to comprehend. So, practice using lots of PTE listening material.Β  Apart from using practice materials, listening news, documentaries and speech programs will help you to get used to different accent. Practice listening range of recordings from simple to complex ones. The more you practice the more you start understanding the recordings.
