NAATI CCL Note Taking Strategies and Tips

Every language assessment test includes the evaluation of the listening module which actually depends on the note-taking skills. However, this has always remained a challenge for students because either they do not have appropriate strategies or there is a lack of practice for the same. This article will elaborate that how one can attain adept skills of writing down content in NAATI CCL note. It will include note-taking samples to comprehend the concept in detail.

Let us first understand and acquire knowledge about basic elements of the test marking criteria

  1. Examiner will be marking you according to your answer delivery which includes an important aspect of grammar. So a student needs to take of the following concepts of grammar while answering the segment. First and foremost is the use of tenses, which means if a segment is delivered to you in past tense, answer should be conveyed in past itself not continuous tense. Secondly, gender of the segment cannot be interchanged as well. For example, “my son is sick and cannot come to class.” should be “ਮੇਰਾ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਬਿਮਾਰ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ੳੁਹ ਜਮਾਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਆ ਸਕਦਾ।“ instead sometimes students answer “ਮੇਰਾ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਬਿਮਾਰ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ੳੁਹ ਜਮਾਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਆ ਸਕਦੀ” . Thirdly, all the adverbs and adjectives are equally important to be included in your answer such as now, then, very, currently, perfect, etc.
  2. The language of your note taking matters as well. Some students have a misconception that they need to write their notes in the language it is said. However, on the contrary it is better to write everything in English. Specifically, the segment said LOTE must be translated straightway in English in notes as it keeps your fluency intact all through your exam.
  3. While taking notes map the scenario in your brain because absolute focus on writing can make it hard for you later to understand handwriting or answer. Mapping will keep minor details of prepositions in mind and translation goes more accurate and swifter. For example, the segment is: kindly note that this lift is not working, therefore use the stairs to go to level 8 fort your appointment with the GP.” In this case, draw in your mind the information that you are using staircase instead of lift as you have appointment with GP.
  4. Last but not the least, your handwriting matters as well, so while you are taking notes, do not rush as later you will repent about that segment as the content will not be readable. It is advisable to write with better understandable handwriting. Check out more about NAATI CCL click on it.
