How to Understand the PTE Academic Score Report

PTE score card has two scores, which includes the scoring for communicative skills and enabling skills. The overall score in the PTE test is derived from your communicative skill scores from all the four section, which are Speaking, writing, reading, and listening. This mean that it will measure your performance on different section. Further, it uses the t scaling that ranges from 10-90 points. The communicative skills for the individual section provide your score based on the specific task that assess the skills. It can either be a single skill or group of skills. Similar as overall scoring, the individual communicative skills range from 10-90 points.

Apart from the marks for the content, it assesses the enabling skills. The enabling skills are grammar, fluency, pronunciation, spelling, vocabulary, and written discourse. Every task in the PTE will assess the individual or combined skills. The score card section in the enabling skills will tell you the clear idea of your strength and weakness, and where you could improve upon. For instance, the pronunciation score of 45 indicates your level of pronunciation and assessed through the different tasks in speaking. Similarly, the grammar skills are assessed from writing tasks as well as the reading tasks. The points for the vocabulary skills are given through the appropriate choice of word from reading section and the wide choice of words used in the writing section. Understanding the written discourse is also important because it checks the efficiency of the written language. For instance, when you are writing an essay, the written discourse section will let the test takers know how good they are structuring the text with coherence and with the logical development. So, the written discourse will measure the development, structure, coherence, and general linguistic range. Finally, the spelling score is about the errors. The possible spelling errors can come through two things, either we do not know the spelling of certain words or else, it could be simple typing errors. Mostly, students will make typo errors due to the test environment, hence, proof reading is always advisable. Also, the poor spelling could lead to the points reduced in vocabulary section as the meaning of vocabs depend on its spelling.

Apart from the enabling skills, some of the speaking and writing task will check the content. For example, in writing essay, 3 points out of 15 will go for content and rest will go for the enabling skills. Similarly, the summarize written text, summarize spoken text will have score for content in addition to the enabling skills. In speaking, the significant proportion of point goes t content. Overall, the content score and enabling skills will together go for the communicative score.
