Guide On How to Paraphrase in IELTS

Guide On How to Paraphrase in IELTS

The definition of paraphrasing is all about expressing someone’s idea in your own language without diluting its meaning. In IELTS, paraphrasing is the key for success in writing section. For instance, the essay topic will be given to you and in the introductory paragraph, based on the question prompt, you need to rewrite that in your own words. The quality of writing reflects how well you have understood the question. In the introductory paragraph it is important to write the context of question information and in the following paragraphs, you need to emphasize the key details, however, without repeatedly using the same words and sentence structure paraphrase IELTS.

Example: According to some people, law changes human behaviour? Do you agree or disagree?

Please carefully read the question prompt and understand its context

Original sentence: Law changes human behaviour

Paraphrased sentences:

  • Law has a significant influence in changing the human behaviour
  • Law plays a predominant role in influencing the human behaviour
  • The role of law in changing the human behaviour is unquestionable,

Now look at it, the simple sentence is “law changes human behaviour” but we paraphrased the question by showing little differences in verb and introducing some adjectives such as “predominant, significant and vital.

Okay, now read the complete question “According to some people, law changes human behaviour. Do you agree or Disagree?”

Paraphrase it by taking the context, change the sentence structure in your own way without changing the meaning of it. You will probably get something like this “In the opinion of some people, law has a great influence in changing and controlling the behaviour of people”

Also, the paraphrasing techniques will help writers to take on any type of essay confidently. Further, with the right paraphrasing techniques, you could logically sequence the ideas right from introduction to conclusion by emphasizing the related ideas and your opinion.  The most common types of essays are opinion, advantages and disadvantages, problems and solutions. So, the students must learn the paraphrasing techniques for different question types to effectively introduce the essay topic and logically connect and sequence the ideas throughout the essay.
