PTE academic is accepted by many countries including Australia. This test score is a valid proof for English language proficiency for various visa categories. As every category of visa expects different level of language proficiency, it is significant to understand the required score. The Australian Department of Home affairs (DHA) has classified the language proficiency in different levels. For different level of applications, the range of scores or proficiency is required. To understand it easily, the level has been classified into functional, vocational, competent and superior. The below table shows what is the score range for the each of the proficiency level. For functional, it is required to have an overall score of 30, for vocational, it is 36 in all sections, competent level requires 50 in all sections, proficient and superior requires 65 and 79 in all sections, respectively. The functional and vocational are considerably basic proficiency normally expected by DHA for few Visa categories, however, the most common expected scores are competent to proficient and applicable for university admissions, graduate visas and skilled migrations in certain categories. In some cases, universities would require proficient level, and it depends on the individual university requirement for all courses or for specific types of course such as Nursing and other health care courses.
In general Skilled migration category, the higher the point the better chance for the applicant to be invited by DHA. Hence, PTE is one of the possible and efficient way to increase your points to skilled migration. The minimum score for most of the skilled visa would expect applicant to have a minimum point of 65, hence, achieving a proficient level is mandatory. However, considering the current scenario in immigration including highly competitive environment and increase in basic points, the applicants must aim to achieve the superior level of English. Further, for the points, achieving proficient level will give 10 points, and superior level will give 20 points.
In IELTS, the band scores depend on the scoring range in listening and reading, however, the other sections is highly subjective as it is scored manually, the edge PTE have here over the subjective pattern of IELTS scoring in speaking and writing is the computer scoring, which is totally based on enabling skills such as fluency, and pronunciation for speaking, and written attributes such as Grammar, vocabulary, and Written Discourse for Writing. Hence, the rate of success could be higher if the individual applicants understand the computer scoring and build their competency in those enabling skills with proper techniques and guidance. According to Pearson PTE, the scoring is against the Global scale of English, which is thermometer style scale that provides scores with better accuracy and further, this scale aligns well with other popular testing methods such as IELTS, and TOEFL.

The PTE academic score will provide overall score, individual score for communicative skills that includes speaking, writing, reading and listening, and enabling skills score, all these scores ranges form 10-90 points. The enabling skills are just for understanding purpose that how individuals’ skills on testing attributes, only the overall scores, and communicative skills really matters for the immigration purpose.
